Two local words run through Jersey City's music record. 201 is the city's area code, worn in DJ handles and crew names and attached to the 201 style of doubled drums and stacked blends that the city's mixtape DJs made their own. Chilltown is the city's hip-hop nickname, in use since the early 1980s. This page lists every entry whose sourced text uses either word.
The 201 style is named and defined in the 2006 Jersey City DJ Documentary as a Jersey City production signature: blend-driven mixtapes, doubled drums and stacked acapella blends. Benito is documented as a practitioner. The number also marks people and crews: DJ handles such as @djdyce201, @strongvic201, @juggs201 and dj-flamez-201, the New Jersey Mix Kings 201 collective, flyers billing "201 Squad's and Jersey City's Finest," CF201's stage name, and Mista Quietman's The 201 High School Anthem.
Chilltown has its own page with the documented origin: by the account of pioneer DJ Wimpy Bee, Jersey City kids flipped a line from Ronnie Gee's 1980 record Rap-tivity into Chilltown, Jersey City. The word turns up across the record as the name of the scene, from the founding generation of DJ Stranger Dee and DJ Thurmie Thurm to the Chill Town J.C. Hip-Hop Documentary. See why Jersey City is called Chilltown.
An entry appears here when its own sourced facts use the word. Terms are added only with two or more sourced uses; candidates still short of that are listed in the research notes.
