Operatically trained, she won the Governor's Award at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center competition as a teenager, earning a full scholarship to study music at Rutgers University.
During her first year of college she signed to Reprise Records as one-third of Teddy Riley's girl-group trio Abstrac'; the group's single “Right and Hype” spent six weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 23 on the Hot Black Singles chart across a 17-week run.
She went on to session and background work for artists including Brandy, Bobby Brown, Guy, and fellow New Jersey native Whitney Houston.
Her songwriting credits include Destiny's Child's international No. 1 “No, No, No,” work for Jaheim, Day26's debut single “Got Me Goin’,” and Danity Kane's “Bad Girl” (featuring Missy Elliott) and “Ecstasy” (featuring Rick Ross) — the last two written on MTV's Making the Band 3, where Sean “Diddy” Combs praised her “mean pen game”
She contributed to Michael Jackson's final studio album, Invincible (2001), and has worked with Mary J. Blige, Wyclef Jean, Queen Latifah, Usher, SWV, Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, and LL Cool J; her “No, No, No” was later sampled by Jack Harlow on his Grammy-nominated Come Home the Kids Miss You (2022)
Her honors include Soul Train's Lady of Soul Award and four BMI Publisher & Songwriter Awards; she co-chaired the Recording Academy's New York Songwriters & Composers Wing (2022–2023), runs the publishing company Ms. Mary's Music, and works as an educator and philanthropist.
She is a granddaughter of Kathryn Van Liew and, with her brother Cool Sir Brown, one of the family's modern hitmakers; she is the niece of soul singer MacArthur Munford of the Spellbinders — her mother, Lorraine H. Brown, was Munford's sister — placing her among the cornerstone figures of the Van Liew musical dynasty alongside Chill Divine (Gary Van Liew) and DJ DX (Robert Van Liew)
By her account in the Chill Town J.C. Hip-Hop Documentary, her arranging gift showed early: as a teenager she wrote and arranged the backing harmonies that helped her brother Cool Sir Brown win an MC battle at P.S. 11, and her earliest studio work came through the family's friendship with Biz Markie and Doug E. Fresh.
