Lord Sun Albee Al was the founder of the Jersey City crew Sweet Slick and Slide and one of the most revered party-rockers of the city's early hip-hop era.
In the Record§
Peers describe him as the man who could take over any party, from Jersey City to the Bronx, and credit him with drawing the respect of New York's crews to Chilltown; several artists name him as the reason they began rapping.
His musical family runs deep in the city: his children are DJ Thunderkatt, the rapper Albee Al, and J-Sass; his nephew is DJ E Double.
He is remembered throughout the documentary with the refrain "rest in peace" — a measure of his standing as a foundational figure of the scene.
His children carry the family through the record, by family account given to this archive in 2026: DJ Thunderkatt, the rapper Albee Al, and J-Sass; DJ E Double is their cousin.
His home block was Stegman Street, remembered by the block's own emcees as an epicenter of hip hop and Black culture in Chilltown Jersey City; a 2022 tribute post by Stegman emcee Young Flizo names him one of the great legends and the home of the Sweet, Slick and Sly Crew, also billed S.S.S.C.
The crew's hit was It's Magic, named on a period breakin contest flyer that pictures them doing their hit, and by community tribute; the same tribute credits the crew as the first to bring Doug E. Fresh to Jersey City, at the Armory, when he had one single out.
A period flyer for The Showdown For All DJs at the Benmore Skating Rink on Communipaw Avenue, headlined by Grandmaster Flash imagery, bills Al Bee alongside Strang D, Jimmy M, Sweet S and Sly, Capone, Sir Brown, and the era's crews.
