The Jersey City Sound publishes its whole record as open data: one JSON file with every field of every entry, and one CSV with the record-card fields and sources, so researchers, journalists, students and editors can work with the archive without scraping it. Both files are generated from the same source as the pages, so they never fall out of step.
Download§
- entries.json Every entry with all public fields: facts, sources, record card, galleries, tags. Spreadsheet users want the CSV.
- entries.csv One row per entry: number, name, roles, genres, years active, real name, born, raised, died, origin, neighborhoods, known for, crew or label, status, address and coordinates for places, URL, sources.
What the fields mean§
entry_no is a catalog number, the order a name entered the record, not a rank. status is the evidence tier: doc-verified (on film or in a primary document), web-verified (cited to published sources), community-verified (corroborated firsthand testimony, receipts pending), handle-provided (an entry opened and awaiting its subject). facts are the sentences on the page; sources are their numbered citations. born_in_jersey_city is set only when the entry's own sourced text states it. notability is national when the subject has a chart record, a published encyclopedia article or a confirmed Wikidata identity; otherwise it is left for the editor. Places carry place_type, address, lat, lng and music_connections.
Not included: the private research queue of names the record cannot yet support, and the editor's open to-dos. Those stay off the site until evidence arrives.
License and attribution§
The data is licensed Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. Use it, build on it, and publish what you make, with attribution and the same license. Attribution text: The Jersey City Sound, jerseycitysound.com, CC BY-SA 4.0. Facts are not copyrightable; the wording, the selection and the sourcing are what the license covers. Photographs on the site are credited individually and are not part of the dataset.
How to cite the archive§
Cite the entry you used, with its number and the date you read it:
The Jersey City Sound. "Ransom." Entry No. 027, jerseycitysound.com/entry-ransom.html. Accessed 2026-10-01.
For the dataset as a whole:
The Jersey City Sound (2026). Jersey City music archive dataset [JSON, CSV]. https://jerseycitysound.com/data.html
Each entry's own sources are listed on its page and in the sources field; where you can, cite the primary source the entry compiled and add the archive as further reading.
Corrections§
Found an error in the data? It is an error on the page too. Use suggest an edit or email contact@jerseycitysound.com; the corrections policy explains how changes are handled. Every page shows its last-updated date, and the dataset's generated field says when it was built.
