Double XX Posse were a Jersey City rap group of the early 1990s. The trio was billed as Sugar Ray, Peter Barnes, and DJ BK.
In the Record§
Their debut single, "Executive Class" backed with "On A Mission," came out in 1990 on Jersey City's Mel-O Records, with label production credits to Mel-O Odoms and Ray Howell; Big Beat reissued it in 1991 and signed the group.
By the firsthand account of DJ Flash, a co-producer on the session (given to this archive in 2026), "Executive Class" was built by a room of Jersey City DJs: Flash on the drums, DJ Stranger Dee supplying the instrument sample, brothers Sugar Chris and Magic creating the bassline, and DJ Wimpy Bee also producing.
Their 1992 single "Not Gonna Be Able to Do It" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart, and the follow-up "Head Cracker" peaked at No. 15; the hit also appeared in a season 3 episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
They released the album Put Ya Boots On in 1992 on Big Beat, an Atlantic subsidiary, and Ruff, Rugged and Raw in 1995 on Atlantic, which carried the Lord Finesse produced single "Money Talks."
The group's name traveled with the city's own: the 1995 Usenet Rap Dictionary defined "Chilltown" as "Jersey City, Double XX Posse," and Jersey City DJ and archive founder DJ DX took his name from the group.
