Semaj da DJ

DJ · c. 1998–present

Semaj da DJ — whose name is James spelled backward — is a Jersey City DJ who has been mixing since 1998, coming up by studying the local DJs around him and mastering the craft of mixing and blending.

In the Record§

He founded his own label, T.O.M. Digital Production — also known as Team of Monstars — a collective of close friends who shared his interest in the business, among them DJ Evil, E Baby, Yoshi, and Shady.

His first mixtape reached stores in early 2000; as his fan base grew he expanded the team and his retail footprint — operating record stores in West New York and Union City and reaching into other cities — and he sold mixtapes through Stan's Square Records alongside the city's top DJs.

That visibility, amplified by the rise of social media, led a local filmmaker to include him in the 2006 Jersey City DJ Documentary.

He later released the Jersey City Mix, which went viral on the strength of a defiant hometown catchphrase — spreading across boomboxes, ringtones, and passing cars to become one of the city's most repeated hooks.
