Kool & the Gang formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964, founded by brothers Robert 'Kool' Bell and Ronald Bell along with five neighborhood friends who all attended Lincoln High School in the city.

Before settling on their name the group went through earlier identities including the Jazziacs, the Soul Town Band, the New Dimensions, and Kool & the Flames.
They honed their sound in Jersey City basements, at St. John's Church, and at the Boys and Girls Club on Ash Street before achieving national and international success across funk, soul, R&B, and pop.
Their catalog is among the most sampled in music history, and Jersey City honored them in 2016 by officially renaming a section of Maple Street 'Kool & the Gang Way'.
Between 1969 and 1987 the group built one of the most enduring chart histories in R&B and pop, with 25 Top-10 R&B hits, 9 Top-10 pop hits, and 31 gold and platinum albums; worldwide album sales exceed 70 million.
Their 1970s street-funk era produced horn-driven anthems including “Jungle Boogie” (No. 4 pop, 1973) and “Hollywood Swinging” (No. 6 pop and their first No. 1 R&B single, 1974), after they first reached the Hot 100 in 1969 with the instrumental “Kool & the Gang”.
After adding lead singer James “J.T.” Taylor, the group reached its 1980s commercial peak with “Ladies' Night” (No. 8, 1979), “Too Hot” (No. 5, 1980), “Joanna” (No. 2, 1983), and “Cherish” (No. 2, 1985).
Their signature song “Celebration” spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1981 and six weeks atop the R&B chart, and remains the group's only No. 1 pop hit.
The group's line runs directly into the city's next generation of hitmakers: founding drummer George Brown was stepfather to Attrell and Jarrett Cordes of PM Dawn, putting two generations of Billboard No. 1 records in one Jersey City family.
