William Wallace Gilchrist (January 8, 1846 -- December 20, 1916) was an American composer born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and a major figure in nineteenth-century Philadelphia's musical life.

He founded the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia in 1874, one of the oldest choral organizations in the United States, and served as its director for decades.
He received the Cincinnati Festival Prize in 1882 for his Symphony in C major, making him one of the more recognized American orchestral composers of his era.
