Gil Melle (December 31, 1931 -- December 28, 2004) was an American jazz musician, painter, and electronic music composer from Jersey City, New Jersey, who was among the first jazz artists to record as a leader for Blue Note Records.

His early Blue Note sessions in the 1950s featured a hard bop and progressive jazz approach; he later moved into electronic music and became a pioneering composer of science fiction film and television scores, including the original 'The Andromeda Strain' (1971) soundtrack.
